Chapter 240: Changes at Home
Zhu Yanyi suddenly remembered her parents’ business. "Oh, I almost forgot something important, Grandpa Zhan. My dad came to the capital for two reasons. First, to travel with us. Second, to buy vacuum packaging machines for fruits and vegetables. He wants the best domestic ones. I thought it best to ask you for advice."
Grandpa Zhan thought for a moment and understood. "You want to open a factory?"
Zhu Yanyi nodded and explained their family’s plans and future vision. "We currently contract a hundred acres of land. We will add more next year. If it is profitable, we will expand further. I believe we can turn our area into our own agricultural paradise." She organized her words carefully, explaining everything clearly. Given the elders’ high status, she knew she had to be clear before asking for help.
"My dad is a farmer by birth. Even though he worked in a factory briefly, he always felt closer to the land. Since contracting the land, he has loved working on it. He has made the hundred acres very prosperous. However, the profit is small. We farmers do not make much money. The real profit goes to the middlemen. They buy our produce in bulk and sell it for a profit. If we only had a hundred acres, it would be fine. But we plan to grow. Therefore, our current sales model is not suitable for the long term."
Zhu Yanyi paused briefly, then continued.
"As our land increases, our output will increase. I also plan to suggest my dad contract mountain land. There is much to grow on mountains. Mountain sweet potatoes taste better than flatland ones. Mountain melons are sweeter. Mountains are also suitable for fruit trees, like bayberries and plums. We can also plant tea trees. Tea trees produce tea leaves and seeds. The seeds can be pressed for oil. We know all this as children of farmers. All in all, there is much we can do. But we will take it step by step. We do not want to rush. One thing is certain: next year, with more produce, we cannot sell the same way. Selling only to local middlemen is not promising. My dad wants to try opening a vacuum packaging factory. We will vacuum pack seasonal vegetables to keep them fresh and send them to different places. China is huge, with many markets and opportunities. This is the most modern way to sell agricultural products. However, we have no experience. My dad knows the machine must be reliable. He said it must not be like a villager’s second-hand tractor that bursts tires daily or breaks down constantly. My dad wants the best machine. Although he knows some mechanics, he has no connections to buy such machines. So, I volunteered to ask Grandpa Zhan for help." Zhu Yanyi did not hide her purpose.
