Chapter 2979
"I never thought snow could be used in such a way," a doctor nearby remarked.
"Commissioner Yan, this is Dr. Feng Chun, the lead surgeon here," Chen Jianshe introduced.
"Hello, Dr. Feng. I am Yan Xiwan," Yan Xiwan introduced herself.
"You are Yan Xiwan? Wonderful! Now that you’re here, you can perform some of the surgeries." Dr. Feng Chun’s enthusiastic greeting made Yan Xiwan pause slightly.
"Is everything alright, Dr. Feng?" Yan Xiwan asked gently.
Dr. Feng Chun waved his hands quickly. "I’m fine. I’m just happy."
Then, as if remembering something, he added, "I haven’t properly introduced myself yet. Dr. Yan, I am Professor Feng’s nephew."
"You are the professor’s nephew?" Yan Xiwan was surprised to meet him here.
Dr. Feng Chun nodded. "My uncle has told me that your medical skills have surpassed his. He said you are proficient in both Chinese and Western medicine, and that there is hardly any condition you cannot treat."
"My uncle is just being kind," Yan Xiwan said with a helpless smile.
"No, he isn’t," Dr. Feng Chun shook his head. "I know my uncle well. He doesn’t praise people lightly. If you weren’t capable, he wouldn’t say such things."
Yan Xiwan smiled again, choosing not to humble herself further. "Please rest assured, Dr. Feng. Since I am here, I will do my utmost to save every wounded person."
"That is truly wonderful," Dr. Feng Chun said. "I am the only lead surgeon here. Sometimes, several patients need surgery in a single day. Because we are too busy, we have to watch some of them pass away. I cannot describe how that feels. So, for the coming days, I will be relying on you, Dr. Yan."
"It is my duty," Yan Xiwan replied. Since she had come here, she had no intention of standing by.
Yan Xiwan then went to place the box of medicine she had brought aside, where it was carefully stored by designated personnel. Medicine was the most scarce resource in this location.
Thinking she had some free time, Yan Xiwan decided to go outside to see if she could find any medicinal herbs. She also brought along some bottles.
"You want to go find herbs?" Chen Jianshe stopped her as she prepared to leave. she looked at the weather outside. Although it wasn’t snowing, the thick snow on the ground showed no sign of melting.
"Yes, I want to look for herbs. Although the medicine I brought seems like a lot, it will run out if we use it every day. If I can find suitable local herbs, we can reduce our usage of the imported medicine and save it for critical cases."
Yan Xiwan knew the battle would not end soon. She had prepared for a long stay, but the supply of medicine needed to be addressed. Although supplies would be sent from the rear, the supply lines were long, and each field hospital likely received very little.
"Alright, I will arrange for someone to go with you," Chen Jianshe agreed immediately, understanding the importance of her plan.
As they went out, Chen Jianshe noticed Yan Xiwan carrying a basket full of bottles and jars. Curious, he asked, "What are you bringing these for?"
Yan Xiwan smiled. "Snow is also a type of medicine. I want to see if I can find snow that has covered medicinal herbs. That snow absorbs the medicinal properties of the plants, which can greatly help meet our medical needs."
"I see," Chen Jianshe realized. He pointed to a young man nearby. "Xiao Li, you know him. He is most familiar with this area. Let him guide you."
"Thank you, Comrade Xiao Li," Yan Xiwan said.
"No trouble at all," Xiao Li shook his head quickly. "Dr. Yan, you are solving our problems for the wounded. Besides, I run around here daily, so it’s no trouble."
"These are Xiao Zheng and Xiao Kuang. They will accompany you for protection. Although this area is relatively safe, we must be prepared for any emergency," Chen Jianshe added.
Yan Xiwan understood and did not refuse. "Thank you, comrades."
Xiao Zheng and Xiao Kuang also waved their hands, indicating it was no problem.
Yan Xiwan led them out. The snow here was not extremely deep, but it reached knee-height, making movement difficult.
Yan Xiwan looked around and pointed in a direction. "Let’s go this way."
Xiao Li looked surprised. "Dr. Yan, how do you know there are herbs here?"
"I don’t know for sure, but I am judging by the wind direction. Many herbs need good light, some need dry conditions, and others prefer shade or high humidity. The snow here is thinner, indicating this area was originally drier. I am looking for a specific herb that grows in dry places, so we go this way."
Yan Xiwan explained patiently.
"I never knew there were such details. If you hadn’t told us, we wouldn’t have known," Xiao Li said, amazed by the intricacies of herb gathering.
Yan Xiwan scanned the surroundings carefully. Suddenly, she spotted a hint of red. She hurried over.
Carefully, she took out a bottle and collected the snow on top. She then applied a label, marked it, and placed it back in the basket.
She then cleared the snow from the surrounding area, revealing a cluster of small red flowers on the ground.
"What is this? It can survive in this freezing cold?" Xiao Zheng asked curiously.
"We come here often, but we have never seen such plants here before," Xiao Li added.
Yan Xiwan smiled. "This plant is called Red Plum. Yes, the same name as the flower you know, but this is different from the common Red Plum. This variety is an excellent hemostatic herb."
Yan Xiwan continued, "If you are on a mission and run out of medicine while injured, you can look for this plant. It grows all year round. People usually think it is just beautiful, but few know its hemostatic properties."
"Because it is a low-growing plant, even strong winds cannot blow it away. Even if covered by snow, it will not die."
Yan Xiwan carefully picked the herbs and placed them in a basket.
"We will help you look," Xiao Kuang offered.
Yan Xiwan instructed, "Remove the top layer of snow, but keep the snow that is directly on the Red Plum flowers. Put it in the bottles and mark them well. When we add this snow water to the Red Plum during surgery, the hemostatic effect will be even better."
"Understood." With Yan Xiwan’s guidance, Xiao Li, Xiao Zheng, and Xiao Kuang began helping to gather the herbs.
