"Pulse check? Is Qiaolian sick?" Xie Xinlian looked worried. "Pregnant women can’t eat just anything. Did she catch a cold? Bring her back quickly." She avoided mentioning house calls.
"You’re the one with a cold! My daughter-in-law is healthy," Gan Juhua snapped, cutting her off.
"If she’s healthy, why send Ani?" Zhu Shunyao asked coldly. "I’ve never heard of seeking a doctor for no reason. Do you have too much money to waste?"
"You’re the one wasting money! We just want Ani to tell us if it’s a boy or girl," Gan Juhua blurted out.
Zhu Shunyao looked at Gan Juhua, then turned to Zhu Xiangyao. "Xiangyao, is this your idea?"
"No! I just want to check on Qiaolian," Zhu Xiangyao said quickly, though he didn’t believe it himself.
"Whatever the reason, Ani isn’t going with you," Zhu Shunyao refused firmly. It was absurd. Asking an eleven-year-old girl to determine the baby’s gender? Did they think he was so easy to fool?
Zhu Xiangyao’s face darkened. "Brother…"
Zhu Shunyao waved his hand. "Since you call me brother, I’ll speak as one. You decided to have a second child. As long as the baby is healthy, why does gender matter? Or do you only want a boy? Will you abort it if it’s a girl?"
"If it’s a girl, we don’t want it," Gan Juhua said without thinking.
Zhu Shunyao laughed in anger. "Then Ani definitely isn’t going. Even if she says it’s a girl, will you believe her? If you believe her and abort, what if it’s a boy? If you don’t believe her, why check at all? Ani would only suffer for nothing. I won’t let my precious daughter endure such humiliation."
