Zhu Yanyi took the baby from Yang Chuang’s arms. She glanced at the infant, gently checked its pulse, and then carried it directly into the room. She opened her medical kit and said to Yang Chuang, “Pour me a cup of warm water. Remember, it must be warm—not hot, not cold.”
Yang Chuang quickly found a bowl nearby and poured some warm water for her. Zhu Yanyi took out a bottle of diluted Spirit Spring water. She carefully dropped a single drop into the bowl, then asked Yang Chuang to fetch a small spoon. She stirred the mixture gently and carefully fed it to the baby. After swallowing the water, the infant cooed softly, opened its eyes, and its complexion improved significantly.
Zhu Yanyi told Yang Chuang, “The baby was just choking on its breath. It is fine now. Whose child is this?”
“It belongs to the family from the tragedy over there,” Yang Chuang explained, recounting what he had discovered. “They say Luo Wen is a soldier. His wife died in the incident, leaving only this child. No matter what, we must find a way to keep the baby safe.”
Zhu Yanyi sighed. “Does Luo Wen know about this?”
“I will wait until dawn to make a phone call. I’ll have someone investigate which military district Luo Wen is stationed in and arrange for him to return. It is not good news, though.” Military leave was usually a rare joy, but now his home had become a scene of disaster.
Zhu Yanyi tilted her head. “Can we find the killer?”
“For now, I can only ask the village chief to send people to guard the scene. We will have to wait until dawn for the police to arrive,” Yang Chuang sighed. He then pointed at the baby. “Little Junior Sister, please help take care of this child for a while. I am leaving now. I should reach the post practice chamber by dawn, so it is better to make the call early.”
“Okay.” Zhu Yanyi thought for a moment and agreed. “Remember to buy some milk powder when you return. Babies cannot survive on water alone.” She had noticed during her examination that the infant was only four months old, an age when it needed milk.
“Alright, I understand. I will bring milk powder back.” Yang Chuang gave a thumbs-up gesture, prepared to leave, and walked into the courtyard. Seeing the yard full of children, he said, “Please help take care of these children too.”
Zhu Yanyi rubbed her forehead. “I feel like I am not here for a summer camp, but to work as a nanny. Go, go.” Although she did not explicitly agree, her tone implied acceptance.
Yang Chuang left. Zhu Yanyi looked at the children sleeping soundly on the ground, then thought of the baby on the bed nearby. She shook her head in speechlessness, tapped her forehead, and thought, Well, I must do what needs to be done.
However, she realized she could not handle everything alone. She wondered if Yang Chuang trusted her or was simply careless. She then called out, “Brother Luo, Brother Wang, come out.”
Luo Gang and Wang Ye emerged from the shadows. Zhu Yanyi pointed at the children on the ground. “Please help watch them. I still need to check on that baby.”
Luo Gang, aware of the situation, said, “Miss, should I use the special passage to find Luo Wen?”
“Can you find someone through the special passage?” Zhu Yanyi looked at Luo Gang. She knew her background was unusual, but she never asked about it.
Luo Gang nodded. “Yes, I can.”
“Then go find her. It is better for her to know sooner rather than later. This child has lost its mother. Reuniting with its father early is a good thing.” Although Zhu Yanyi had not seen the scene, she knew that if Yang Chuang called it a tragedy, the sight would be grim.
